About Dhvani

Dhvani was formed as a concerted attempt to Preserve, Explore & Disseminate Indian musical heritage. As a grassroots organization devoted to the in-depth understanding of our rich cultural heritage, Dhvani fulfills the need to inculcate an integrated understanding in a culture of cultures and to develop an understanding of music of other cultures as well.

Committed to art as a whole, Dhvani explores the closely interwoven relationship of South Indian classical music to language, mythology, philosophy, religion, yoga and dance. In order to achieve this, Dhvani maintains links to international research organizations who focus on the same themes. Dhvani also emphasizes the need for backward integration thus explaining to the viewer/listener the integral link art has with the artisans as well.

The wealth of knowledge encompassed in our gurus is an asset little tapped and even less understood in an era where public performances and fame gained thereof are the yardsticks of knowledge. Dhvani uses as its tools interactive guest lectures, teaching and conducting workshops by maestro teachers.

In a constant search for what we can learn mutually, Dhvani underlines the fundamentals of practical training, theoretical understanding and learning through documentaries and guest lectures. Together with acknowledged masters of the various disciplines, Dhvani aims to explore the experience of cross-cultural musical exchanges as well as specific themes in ancient literary works when understood in relation to music.
